Synopsis:
In Hazlehurst, Mississippi, three troubled sisters cope with their circumstances (one, for example, has just shot her husband) with surprising warmth and humour. This Pulitzer Prize and New York Drama Critics Circle Award winner shows how anyone can try to escape the past and seize the future.
Roles:
Lenny MaGrath: Female presenting, stage age 28-35. Lenny is eldest of the Mcgrath sisters. She is insecure and lonely. Has carried the weight of caring for her sick grandfather. She loves her sisters but can be jealous of them.
Meg McGrath: Female presenting, stage age 25-30. Meg is the middle wild child. She recently returns home after trying to build a music career in LA. She is thought to be the favourite of the three sisters.
Babe Botrelle: Female presenting, stage age 20-25. Babe is the youngest sister. She has recently been arrested for shooting her husband.
Chick Boyle: Female presenting, stage age 28-35. Chick is the overbearing first cousin of the McGrath sisters. Very concerned with protecting the family’s good southern name. Very judgmental.
Doc Porter: Male presenting, stage age 28-35. Doc is Meg’s ex-boyfriend. His dreams of becoming a doctor were dashed after being injured in Hurricane Camille while with Meg. He has since married and had children but remains fond of Meg.
Barnette Lloyd: Male Presenting, stage age 25-30, ideally baby faced or boyish. Barnette is a young ambitious lawyer hired to defend Babe. He has his own motives for taking the case. He can be extremely awkward.
NOTE: Southern accents encouraged but not required for the auditions. You may be asked to attempt it. They will be required for those who are ultimate cast.
