About the Playwright
Robert Ainsworth was born in Birmingham, England. One of eight children, Ainsworth felt crowded in, so to find his own space he moved to spacious Ontario in 1980. First involved in theatre as an actor, Ainsworth later moved to directing and finally to writing. He began writing for children, but later moved towards dramas that contain comedy in them. Ainsworth’s love to write about people has created a character based writing style in his work. As a self proclaimed rebel against rules, Ainsworth has stated, “Most of the time I don’t know what’s going to happen in the play, as I let the characters take me there. Very often I’m just as surprised as anyone by what happens.” Since 1997 Ainsworth has decorated his playwriting résumé with such works of art as: Expecting the Worst, Frozen Dreams, Autumn Leaves, and The Icicle Princess. Ainsworth’s breakout play was his award winning drama, The Mouse House, premiering at the Peterborough Theatre Guild in 2012 and receiving standing ovations night after night. The Mouse House was an instant resounding hit that went on to win Best Production of an original Canadian Play at both the E.O.D.L. Festival and at the Theatre Ontario Festival.
