SYNOPSIS
Jane Austen’s beloved story follows the Dashwood sisters as they try to navigate the perilous waters of romantic relationships and societal norms. The story is an often hilarious portrayal of the demands and doctrines associated with 19th Century English society, as well as a frank examination of a world where marriages are complex business arrangements and love seems all too often a secondary consideration. This 2014 adaptation by Kate Hamill is a delightful romp and a skilled retelling of this timeless classic.
ROLES
ELINOR DASHWOOD (22 to 28 years old): The eldest Dashwood sister, sensible and polite.
MARIANNE DASHWOOD (18 to 22 years old): The middle Dashwood sister, sensitive and romantic.
MARGARET DASHWOOD (13 to 16 years old): She is the youngest Dashwood sister, impulsive, young.
MRS. DASHWOOD (40+ years old): Mother to the three Dashwood sisters, she is retiring and polite.
FANNY DASHWOOD (30+ years old): She is the wife of John Dashwood, nasty and conniving.
JOHN DASHWOOD (35+ years old): Husband to Fanny Dashwood and half-brother to the sisters, he is somewhat pompous and easily influenced by his sneaky wife.
COLONEL BRANDON (35+ years old): Somewhat awkward and shy, an older bachelor, well mannered.
EDWARD FERRARS (25+ years old): He is the consummate English gentleman, polite, charming, and handsome.
ROBERT FERRARS (19+ years old): The younger brother to Edward, immature, impulsive, and loud.
LADY MIDDLETON (30+ years old): Every bit the over-bred English lady, pretentious and haughty.
JOHN MIDDLETON (40+ years old): A distant relation to Mrs. Dashwood, he is the classic country gentleman, hunting and horses, that sort of thing.
JOHN WILLOUGHBY (25 to 30 years old): Extremely handsome, charming, and disarming. He is a head-turner and he knows it.
MRS. JENNINGS (50+ years of age): Extremely pleasant and outgoing, she is Sir John Middleton’s mother-in-law.
LUCY STEELE (18 to 22 years of age): A young girl with no fortune or prospects.
ANNE STEELE (25+ years of age): Lucy’s sister, very indiscreet.
Please note that this adaptation calls for all actors to play more than one role. We will attempt to reproduce this wherever possible in the final production. Therefore, all actors will be asked to read several characters as part of the audition.
