The Suffragist

Season 2

Original Production

This was announced as being the first play written by a Canadian playwright, put on in a Canadian theatre and acted by Canadian players, and was thus a landmark in the development of Canadian theatre.

Written by Rev. Donald Guthrie of Knox Church, Ottawa, the four-act play took place at the Russell Theatre with a portion of the proceeds going to endow beds in the Duchess of Connaught Canadian Hospital at Cliveden, England.

(It was subsequently strongly criticized in letters by ODL member Olive Garrett published in the Citizen and Journal as being "anti-suffragist" and an insult to women!)
