Season 23
Dec 26 to Dec 28, 1935

in association with the Orpheus Operatic Society

Orpheus Musical Theatre (as it is today known) began life in 1905 as a glee club giving its first concert in 1907. In 1915, it became the Orpheus Amateur Operatic Society and began producing Savoy operas in the Russell Theatre. But in 1928 the Russell, Ottawa’s only playhouse, burned down and was eventually demolished to make way for Confederation Square in 1937. Orpheus presented one more lavish production in 1930 at the Little Theatre, but found that the reduced seating capacity and short run made it financially unsustainable. Productions halted for five years though the Society continued to meet. In 1935, the Ottawa Drama League decided to substitute a musical play for its Christmas production and invited the Orpheus Society to collaborate; this production of H.M.S. Pinafore was the result. The following year the ODL again collaborated with Orpheus on The Pirates of Penzance. Orpheus performed one more operetta – The Gondoliers – at the Little Theatre in Dec 1938, under its own auspices (therefore not listed in this database). There was one final co-production - the pantomime Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves - in Dec. 1939 - with the ODL Workshop. After that Orpheus moved to the Ottawa Technical High School and continued to thrive.
